Brief Bio - February, 2003

Harold Olejarz’s first interest as an artist was in sculpture, he created tangible, three-dimensional objects and worked almost exclusively in wood. In 1985 his work evolved into Performance Art and he spent the next ten years creating wearable sculptures and performing across the United States and in Europe. Since the early 1990’s, his interest in the computer as a visualization tool has taken his art in new, digital directions.

His digital images have grown out of a deep interest in technology, but his previous work as a performance artist is also a factor. In his recent digital images, Olejarz recaptures the excitement of an unpredictable interactive street performance by treating a flatbed scanner as a stage on which his hands perform. The images show Olejarz’s hands, sometimes holding objects, distorted by his movements during the scanning process.

Olejarz has received numerous grants and awards for both his art and his teaching. He received two New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship and grants from the Dodge Foundation, Franklin Furnace, Painted Bride and the Wisconsin Arts Board. He has completed a public art commission for NJ Transit in Jersey City and is presently working on a new public art commission for NJ Transit in Ridgewood, NJ. He served on the Executive Board of the Art Educators of New Jersey, edited the organization’s newsletter and started its web site. He has written for the NAEA news and Arts Magazine. Presently, Olejarz teaches digital imaging, digital video and Television production at Eisenhower Middle School in Wyckoff , NJ.
